Reveal Don't Conceal

Basement bathrooms need not be second rate to their above ground counterparts, yet, many of us can’t kick the nasty habit of relegating all things dark and dingy to the basement. It’s time to do away with castaway mentalities and enter into multi-level love affairs with our homes, starting with a subterranean bathroom makeover. Why risk the embarrassment of sending guests to the dreaded basement bathroom when ‘the good’ one upstairs is occupied or temporarily out of order? With a plan and a playful attitude, you can easily transform your basement bathroom into the fresh and fabulous spot it should be. So throw a little love its way and you’ll soon find you’ve got nothing to hide!

Walk on the Wild Side

Have you ever shied away from purchasing brilliantly patterned wallpaper out of fear that it would soon wear out its welcome? If the answer is yes, then consider your basement bathroom the perfect opportunity to be brave and overcome your fear with a fabulous update. You can reduce the visual impact of floor-to-ceiling pattern by installing wallpaper above a chair rail; the effect is a tasteful band of pattern that is tempered by the neutral appearance of the wall, wainscoting or beadboard paneling below the chair rail. For this bathroom, we installed Kelly Wearstler’s vivid Feline Wallpaper in ‘Lake Slate’ above a newly installed chair rail. The classic animal print boasts a funky ikat effect to create a stunning display of colour and pattern.

Stay on Track

When sourcing materials for your bathroom makeover, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by your options, but don’t let the influx of possibilities distract you from what can be done easily to achieve winning results. Let your wallpaper selection help you determine the room’s colour scheme and the style of materials and accessories you choose. In this case, the featured shades of blue and slate are referenced in the decorative vase and framed artwork. The animal print is balanced by the installation of a traditional chair rail and baseboard moulding; the crisp white paint finish on the lower half of the wall provides a welcomed contrast to the modern wallpaper. To amplify the chic factor, we chose a classic washstand style vanity with exposed pipes and a polished chrome frame. The marble countertop adds a textural element to the space in tune with the densely patterned wallpaper.

Let There Be Light

It’s hard to have a sunny outlook on basement decorating when there’s very little natural light to take advantage of. But with a generous application of paint, pattern and the right lighting, you can create a space that’s light, bright and cheery to boot! We recommend painting the region below the chair rail white to create a canvas that reflects the light for added brightness, while a generous covering of playful wallpaper above the rail offers pleasing colour and keeps the space from looking clinical. Finally, always flank your vanity mirror with two light sconces to provide ambient flexibility and complementary lighting to standard pot lights.
