Alpine Farmhouse
Design by Sarah Richardson, Natalie Hodgins & Shannon Morrison
Photography by Valerie Wilcox
This house in nestled in undulating hills that roll to the south, so the mandate in each and every room was to keep it spare, free of colour and clutter, and let the views and natural light be the wow factor. We brought in some European charm with a warm Scandi palette of oatmeal, wheat, flax, camel, and mushroom, and some Alpine-inspired accents.
"The location has all the charm you'd want from the country: a driveway flanked by a canopy of trees, a white picket fence, the sounds of crickets and bullfrogs - and the place of their dreams was here, not anywhere else."
Dining Room
Serene Character
Simple and free of adornment, the dining room at Alpine Farmhouse is a soothing and sophisticated space both to gather and spend solo time (with 2 cozy swivel chairs tête-à-tête near the foot of the table). Craving a serene dining space at home that's high on character and style and hush on everything else? Here's 3 of our favourite DOs from this makeover:
- Exposed floor joists from the second story make an architectural statement
- Two George Nelson bubble saucer pendants up the Zen factor
- 160-year old barn floorboards give the streamlined trestle-inspired table custom cred

Window Seat
It's tea time! Which seat do you choose? A cozy spot along the window bench, or one of two authentic reproduction Tyrolean chairs as seen here at the Alpine Farmhouse. Hard choice, I know.

Living Room
Handsome Hearth
In keeping with the Alpine Farmhouse's top-to-bottom Scandinavian-inspired style, the fireplace zone is spacious and calm and all about function with a handsome leather upholstered chair and foot rest to kick back and relax, and a convenient marble stone hearth that extends to include a bench and firewood niche beneath.

Kitchen
Inherent Beauty
Even spare kitchens can be dynamic! Our mandate for this kitchen was for the overall design to be as quiet as possible. This translated into streamlined layers of crisp white, white oak and Arabescato marble for a look that is both simple and sophisticated in virtue of their inherent beauty. Here are a few of our favourite features:
- Stools are covered in a buttery camel-coloured leather to make them blend in with the white oak island rather than jump out
- Contemporary pendants by Ridgely Studio Works appear to float over the island and cast an ethereal glow
- The vent hood disappears by cladding it in millwork that's lacquered to match the cabinets
Artful Accents
Pottery lovers, take note! This treatment has quickly become one of our favourite ways to display treasures. Here at Apline Farmhouse, a simple, minimal kitchen is made artful with a collection of salt-glazed pottery that looks like a still-life painting on white oak accent shelves.

Entry
Stove Style
As the temperature starts to dip, there's nothing more sightly than a cozy fireplace. Here, a modern woodstove anchors the large kitchen space and radiates heat throughout the open-concept main floor. Since the kitchen is located in the nearly 150-year old section of the house, the structure dictated the placement of the stove; it now sits in front of the door to the original house porch and in front of a hidden pantry room.
Work Zone
Got a work zone at home? If you're looking to create extra functionality at home but don't want to commit to a full fledged office, try making the most of a cozy corner. Tuck a stylish chair in a sunlit spot for the ultimate morning coffee break + spare and sleek desk with storage for your laptop. Bonus points for adding a stylish waterfall countertop! Finish it off with a colourful vintage painting for smiles all around!

Nifty Nook
Can you think of a small space or nook at home that needs a little something extra? Try making use of it by installing a floating bench. Nestled between the walls here at Alpine Farmhouse, the support is clad in a leftover piece of oak flooring and upholstered in a remnant piece of fabric.

Bedroom & Guest Bathroom
Outside In
Does your bedroom have you craving that irresistible 'fall-into-bed' feeling? Try letting the outside inspire your inside! It's all about natural colours, materials and texture. For the guest room at the Alpine Farmhouse, we kept the look clean and spare with soft linens and touches of rustic salmons and grey colours that we plucked from the tundra-inspired photography. Matching custom pillow covers, a modern white oak table, and a wooly sheep sculpture bring the look together harmoniously.

Mudroom
Gear Up
Want to know how to create a mudroom for the family who plays hard? At the Alpine Farmhouse, our clients are active skiers, bikers, and horseback riders, so it's all gear, all the time. Here, we installed a durable vein-cut limestone floor and built a solid white oak bench with spacers for wet clothing and equipment. Plus, ample wall pegs for extra convenience!
